The story has been picked up by online newspaper VietNamNet and Dan Tri amongst many others and has caught the imagination across the globe.

We’re going to be providing 40 meals on October 8th to recognise 1,000 years of Hanoi.  We reckon it’s only fair to also charge the kind of money you might have paid a millennium ago – so we’re only charging 1,000 Dong.

All you have to do is join our Facebook group.

The way it works is that the winners, picked at random from our Facebook friends, each get to bring three friends and will sit together on a table of four.  There will be ten tables.  So if you want to bring you friends then, for the best chance, get them to join our Facebook group too.  Together you have a better chance of winning.

We were delighted to hear that news of this celebration had made it all the way to the US.  Culinary writer and Vietnamese celebrity chef Andrea Nguyen, who visited Hanoi earlier this year – added her support via Twitter, with many of her almost 2,000 followers also passing on the news.  We’re delighted that she has joined our Facebook group too. Nhà hàng Old Hanoi trên phố Tôn Thất Thiệp được nhắc đến khá nhiều trên các tờ báo lớn khi đầu bếp nổi tiếng thế giới Gordon Ramsey thực hiện một trong những seri phim về ẩm thực tại đây trong thời gian ông ở Hà Nội. Gordon Ramsey cũng đã chính thức khai trương nhà hàng Old Hanoi và nhà hàng này đã nhận được rất nhiều bình luận trên mạng từ các thực khách.

Ông Quân hi vọng bữa tiệc này sẽ là một trong các chương trình mở màn cho dịp lễ chào mừng Hà Nội kỷ niệm 1000 năm.

“Vào ngày 8 tháng 10, cả thành phố sẽ được trang hoàng lẫy lẫy và tất cả mọi người sẽ rất tưng bừng phấn khởi. Chúng tôi chỉ muốn đóng góp một phần nhỏ vào lễ kỷ niệm này và thể hiện sự ủng hộ của chúng tôi” Ông Quân chia sẻ “Với chúng tôi, Hà Nội là cái nôi của ẩm thực”

The Vietnamese legend of Son Tinh and Thuy Tinh pits the God of Mountains against the God of the Sea.

Both competed with each other to win the hand of My Nuong, the only child of King Hung 18th with a reputation for both beauty and kindness.

While both showed off their powers over the land and sea respectively – in the end the tie was decided by who could return with an usual wedding list of gifts the soonest.

Amongst the required items were a nine-tusk elephant, a nine-toed chicken, a nine-color haired horse, 100 pots of glutinous rice and 100 banh chung.

The elephants and horse may be a true test but I recently saw such a chicken with my own eyes.

I don’t want to say where I tracked down the chicken to, but there was but a ninth toe  - and others besides.  See a picture of normal chicken’s feet here.)

In the story Son Tinh, the god of the mountain was the winner and while an angry Thuy Tinh tried to gain revenge through floods, Son Tinh just made the mountains higher in order to lift people to safety.

And what of me? There are neither kings no princesses any more so what does a nine-toed chicken get you in 2010? Well, it gets you dinner, that’s what.

Having purchased it from the owner we did what you might expect us to do. We took the above photo and then prepared it for eating.

How did it taste? Good.

Very good.

But that’s probably more to do with the fact that it was organic, rather than its number of toes.

Quan , Old Hanoi

If we had sat down and drawn up a fantasy list of who we’d most like to open Old Hanoi – then the person we ended up with would have been pretty much of the top of the list.

Think fine-dining, think international chef, think more Michelin Stars than you could shake a stick at.  Not to mention a TV career that spans every continent across a number of shows.

Yes, we had Gordon Ramsay visit us right here at Old Hanoi. Better still he filmed an episode of the upcoming series of Gordon’s Great Escape in the restaurant.  Earlier Quan, our boss, was filmed with him as the pair went out to eat, and learn how to cook, duck.

Later, it was Gordon’s idea to officially pronounce Old Hanoi open and we were honoured.

And while his culinary challenge may not have impressed everyone (look here for The Word’s take on the evening) our customers have since been very impressed with the ribs he created and we’ve even decided to name them after the great man.

Thank you Gordon for doing us the honour and being a complete gentleman despite suffering from heat and dehydration on what was just about Hanoi’s hottest day of the year.  If an F-word slipped from your lips then we didn’t catch it.

It may have just been another TV show, in yet another location, for you but for us it was a very special day that we will never forget.
